How my Photography Background Boosts my Design Skills

I studied photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology because I originally wanted to work as a photo editor in a museum or a magazine. Setting up photo shoots in the studio and getting to design the set was my favorite part. As my education progressed and internships turned into jobs, I was introduced to graphic design. It was immediately intriguing, and I embraced it with equal excitement, finding additional courses to take both in and outside of college. I now had two passions – lucky me!

Outstanding graphic design in any medium or industry is informed by a range of expertise, such as color theory, balance, negative space, and storytelling. These are all essential in photography as well.

Certain projects – nonprofit annual reports, magazine layouts, high-end coffee-table books – use a great deal of photography, so I draw on those skills as much as my graphic design expertise. This opens up opportunities for better storytelling for my clients because I employ both perspectives, making me more effective and well-rounded for my clients.
