I was approached by PATH, a nonprofit in Seattle, Washington, to create a cover for a short film DVD and VHS that documented African women's hindrances in preventing HIV in their regions.

The film and accompanying booklet I designed for the nonprofit organization producing the short film PATH would be distributed to clinics and healthcare providers throughout the continent. The goal was to spread awareness of women's options via community gatherings to watch and discuss the film, led by local healthcare providers equipped to answer questions.

African women are often powerless to protect themselves from HIV infection, and the need for preventatives that they can control and employ themselves is essential.

"In Women's Hands" tells stories of HIV's impact on women and the need for women-controlled HIV preventives, emphasizing microbicides as a powerful option. It was important that the design serves this project's goal and allows it to shine rather than extraneous flourishes, taking attention from the message.

In collaborating with my nonprofit client, I was given a selection of photos to choose from, which I was then able to edit down. Among these options, I deliberately chose a main image featuring a group of women, symbolizing the essence of community collaboration. The elevated perspective, portraying the women on a higher plane than the photographer, subtly conveys a sense of power and authority, reinforcing the message of empowerment.

Taking the design a step further, I opted to transform the DVD and booklet covers with a sepia tone, lending a gravitas to the enclosed information. This choice not only enhances the visual appeal but also serves to highlight the nonprofit's color logo, ensuring its prominence.

I meticulously balanced textual content with impactful images of front-line health workers for the booklet layout. These images not only serve to illustrate key points but also provide visual cues for transitions within the booklet. The strategic use of pink accents throughout the content aligns with the nonprofit's branding. It symbolizes women taking proactive steps toward their health—a concept deeply ingrained in the organization's ethos.

Drawing upon my expertise in color theory and photo editing, I crafted a design that captivates and endures. My background in photography and years of creative direction enable me to tackle complex content with finesse, resulting in designs that resonate deeply with the intended audience.
