With a portfolio brimming with meticulously crafted reports for esteemed nonprofit organizations, I've honed the ability to transform even the most complex data and intricate analyses into captivating narratives that resonate deeply with diverse audiences. Each report presents unique challenges and objectives, demanding a tailored approach that seamlessly blends analytical rigor with compelling storytelling.

In designing reports, I consider myself something of a bridge between the organization's expert analysts, copywriters, and the end user who wants to quickly understand the information and how they can act on it. This scenario exemplifies the importance of professional design in every organization's goals.

This particular report, titled "Segregation Forever?", outlines the difficulties faced by people of color aiming to attend selective public universities and offers solutions that can be implemented at collegiate and government levels.

As reports often do, this one had a ton of information. I worked with the lead writer and editor to ensure that the crucial points would stand out for easy readability and the common tendency for people to scan large amounts of information before diving into the details.

I decided to utilize a few ways of highlighting important details because variety can go a long way toward drawing attention. For example, creating 'pull quotes' – repeating a particular line or point of information using a different, larger typeface – draws the reader's eye to some facts deserving of special attention.

I worked from an MS Word draft that included numerous tables for the many data comparisons and results. I translated them into pie charts, tables, and graphs, incorporating the organization's brand color palette. Most of them are made to resemble infographics commonly seen on social media, and they include elements such as a bolded or differently-sized font. This approach allowed readers to feel a sense of familiarity, subconsciously but still encouraging further interest.

I also had the pleasure of featuring historical and contemporary photography, bringing my background in that field to bear. I researched available images on several professional platforms for the ideal mix of past and present depictions to illustrate that the report covers a very long-standing issue.

All of these details had to fit into the overall look and feel of the report and the organization's brand. Given the serious topic, I chose a color palette that mirrored their branding but leaned towards muted tones. These colors and the design detail of intertwined lines are all woven throughout the report, symbolizing how racial disparities are woven through the fabric of society.

Designing for nonprofit organizations often requires meeting deadlines set by donors, which are almost always fixed and firm. This report was no exception and required fast yet creative and thorough action to complete.
